HMRC to start signing up taxpayers for MTD
With the rollout of Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax drawing nearer, HMRC has confirmed that it will begin proactively signing up taxpayers it believes fall within the scope of the new regime from September 2026.
Recent reports suggest that while around 864,000 taxpayers are expected to be affected by MTD requirements, only approximately 570,000 have so far registered, with just 436,000 having submitted their first quarterly update. This highlights that a significant number of eligible taxpayers have yet to take action.

HMRC is encouraging both taxpayers and their agents to register voluntarily before being contacted directly. Taking proactive steps now can help avoid last-minute complications and ensure that digital record-keeping and reporting processes are in place well ahead of any deadlines.
What is Making Tax Digital?
Making Tax Digital is HMRC’s initiative to modernise the UK tax system by requiring eligible self-employed individuals and landlords to:
- Keep digital business records
- Use compatible software to maintain those records
- Submit quarterly updates to HMRC
- Complete an end-of-year final declaration
The aim is to improve accuracy and give taxpayers a clearer, more up-to-date picture of their tax position throughout the year.
Next MTD Quarterly Submission Deadline
For taxpayers already enrolled in MTD for Income Tax, the next quarterly update deadline is 7 November 2026. This submission covers the accounting period ending 30 September 2026.
If you’re currently within the MTD regime, or expect to be brought into scope soon, now is an ideal time to review your digital record-keeping processes and ensure your software is fully compliant.
